Mrs. Thompson
Welcome to Benson Art! I am so excited to be Benson’s new K-2 Art Teacher! I come to Benson with 12 years in the education field, earning my degree in Art Education from Western Illinois University. When I first began my teaching journey, I worked with a group of amazing artists with Autism. They inspired me both as an artist and an educator, so I went back to school at Roosevelt University for my Special Education certification. Over the last decade, I have taught in a mix of special education and art rooms, but my heart truly belongs to art!
Kindergarteners have art twice a week, 20 minutes one morning a week and 30 minutes one afternoon a week. First and second graders have art once a week for 43 minutes. Students will be introduced to drawing, design, painting, printmaking, 2-D mixed media, clay, and 3-D construction.
In art class students will:
-Creatively express and communicate observations, ideas, and emotions visually and verbally
-Learn about and apply art elements and principles to create 2-D and 3-D projects
-Manipulate art materials and handle tools safely
-Study art and artists from past and present
I am looking forward to making lots of great art with Benson’s wonderful artists! Please feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns, or suggestions. I would love to hear from you, and I appreciate your involvement and input!
